About Us

Staran is a social enterprise company established by Third Sector Hebrides as part of their group.

Staran means pathway in Scottish Gaelic

Staran is a pathway for people living in their community to get their life back on track. Staran employs people who have been out of the job market for a long period in somecases for many years due to addiction problems, health problems, and a variety of other reasons.

Grounds Maintenance has always been the bread and butter of Staran. Traditionally it was based on volunteers cutting grass for the elderly and disable. As funding from public bodies has become more difficult to source Staran was faced with a choice. A decision was taken rather than barely existing with low key activities we decided to become more professional in our approach. Staran became a community interest company and began to employ a work force.

To find work Staran went out into the marketplace and began to compete for contracts and other business opportunities. Where ever the business strand we become involved in we are acutely aware that community interest and the health and well being of our work force are paramount.

Today Staran operates Public Service Bus Contracts, Dial-A-Bus contracts, Patient Transport contracts, Community Mini-Bus Hire, MiDAS Training, School Meals Delivery Service, Grounds Maintenance for the public and private sector, Hygienic Contacts for the Council, and Vehicle Maintenance Service for Community Groups.

History of Staran

Staran first began in 1990 as the Gardening and Amenity Project by the Lewis Council of Social Service which later became Voluntary Action Lewis which is now known as Third Sector Hebrides.
